    Literacy – Extracting information
    Steel and aluminium will be compared as two characters are devised that are made of these materials. Children learn about the characters and their material characteristics by completing fun activities based around these characters.

    Creative use of ICT to support and enhance learning.

    This unit is designed to supplement the Stevie Steel vs Alice Aluminium unit of lessons. Through the work they have completed as part of the unit, the pupils will have developed 2 simple characters; Stevie the steel can and Alice, the aluminium can.  Using ICT, the pupils further develop these characters and create some simple animations.

  • Numeracy: Problem solving to include; addition, subtraction, surface area, tessellations. This unit will contain a range of numeracy challenges based around the concept of fitting different can / box shapes onto flat sheets. Set in context of pupils being designers with a challenge to be the most economical.

  • Creative use of ICT to support and enhance learning.

    The Unit, ‘Will it Fit?’ the pupils are asked to cut out a paper template of the can parts and arrange these on a template to work out the most efficient way of arranging them for minimal wastage.  This task shows pupils how this can also be completed using ICT using Microsoft Word. Pupils can then compare the two methods and decide which is easier and more effective.

  • Science: A.T 1 – Planning and carrying out investigations. Children will investigate how two pieces of paper can be joined by only folds (to mimic methods used to join ends to can). They will carry out an investigation into the strength of different kinds of folds.

    Literacy: Sequencing, explanatory texts, written instructions, writing for a younger audience.
    Children will learn about the processes involved in making a can that might hold the common items they have in the food cupboard at home. They will sequence pictures and create instructional texts to tie in with requirements of the Literacy Strategy.

    The ‘Cantastic’ unit allows pupils to understand the method used to create a  two and three piece can, This ICT unit gives pupils the option of developing a PowerPoint presentation to describe this process, but using some presentations already created that are available as a downloads on the MPMA website.

  • Art & Design: designing the game

    Literacy: Persuasive writing, newspaper report, instructional texts.

    The children are designers for MPA. They are to come up with a new, exciting use of a can / tin, that contains a game, but the container must become an integral part of the game – They must design the game, create adverts and persuasive texts about it and older children create a PowerPoint presentation for their product.

    This unit is based on the assumption that the pupils have completed the ‘Game in a tin!’ unit and have designed their own game. This unit suggest ways in which children could promote the sale of their game through the creation of a podcast…. a recorded advert….. that would be suitable for a radio broadcast.

    In this unit, children will investigate different ways of making A4 paper cylinders. They will have to design a cylindrical container out of and A4 piece of paper to hold dried peas.  They will investigate how the volume held is affected by the base diameter and the height of the cylinder.

  • Maths: Handling Data; Processing, representing and interpreting data. 

    Literacy: report writing; explanatory texts
    Children carry out an audit at home to find out what they have that uses a tin or a can. Class results are collated and analysed, using the data for bar chart, graph and spreadsheet work. A supermarket survey could also be completed. Reports on findings written for Literacy in KS 2.

    The activity, ‘Can Count’ asks children to carry out a series of audits on the canned products in their home, local shop or supermarket. An activity sheet gives some data to use. This lists all the products found in Mrs Brown’s cupboard. In this activity, children use MS Excel to input data and to create a graph. They then copy and paste the graph produced into another document where they explain their results.

    Children design a tin to package something for a celebration!
    This lesson is based on a design and technology task linked to a special event. There are many examples of special metal packaging linked to seasonal gifts, anniversaries and celebrations. Usually these speciality packages contain biscuits, sweets or other speciality food items.

    The MPMA ‘Celebrate!’ unit asked children to create a promotional metal container for a product. This project take this further as the groups then create a promotional campaign for their product. Using photography, video and sound, pupils use an application such as Windows Movie Maker  to create a TV advert.

    Metal Packaging Museum

  • History: Chronological understanding, historical enquiry & interpretation.

    Science: Materials.

    Literacy: Sequencing, explanatory texts, written captions, writing for an audience.

    The lesson introduces the theme of museums and collections and is based on the History Programme of Study and in particular historical enquiry and interpretation. There are opportunities for chronological sequencing, explanatory texts and captions for an audience.

    This unit considers why it is important to recycle and how cans can be crushed to reduce transport costs
