Design Guidelines

Discuss needs with chosen supplier at the earliest opportunity and with complete openness. This is the best way to achieve total satisfaction.

Materials

  • consumer rigid metal packaging uses only two materials - steel and aluminium. Steel is usually in the form of tinplate i.e. tin coated steel.
  • steel is used for drinks, aerosols, processed food, powdered food, flour and sugar confectionery, paint, chemicals, automotive, DIY, health & beauty, giftware, vacuum closures and pre-threaded closures.
  • aluminium is used for drinks, aerosols, health & beauty, roll-on pilfer-proof closures and pre-threaded closures.
raw material is supplied to the can and closure makers on coils or as flat sheets depending on the manufacturing process.
  • typical material thickness ranges are:

STEEL
drinks cans from 0.24mm to 0.27mm
processed food cans from 0.14mm
to 0.30mm
aerosols from 0.17mm
to 0.23mm
non-food tins
from 0.20mm to 0.30mm
vacuum closures from 0.15mm to 0.18mm

ALUMINIUM

drinks cans from 0.28mm to 0.34mm
health & beauty
from 0.30mm to 0.45mm
roll-on pilfer-proof closures from 0.21mm to 0.23mm

Decoration

  • most metal packaging is printed. The exception is processed food cans which are normally paper labelled but can be printed.
  • most designs can be reproduced from 6 colours plus an overvarnish.
embossing (raised) and debossing (recessed), registered with the surface graphics, are available on many styles of cans/tins.
  • shaping has always been available on biscuit/confectionery tins but is now increasing possible with high performance applications such as processed food cans and drinks cans.

Lead Times
These will vary greatly between initial and repeat orders, if tooling is required, if the product is plain or printed, the size and quantity of the product and during periods of high seasonal demand.

drinks cans from 1 to 4 weeks
processed food cans (for standard sizes) from 1 to 2 weeks
processed food cans (for standard sizes) otherwise 3 to 4 weeks
aerosols from 2 to 8 weeks
non-food tins from 4 to 16 weeks
closures from 4 to 6 weeks

Product Compatibility
Metal packaging will safely and cost effectively contain a wide range of products, including the most aggressive and dangerous ones. Internal coating technology is highly developed and will satisfy most applications.

Recyclability & Recycling
Both steel and aluminium packaging are totally recyclable and all cans that are collected and returned for recycling will be recycled. Over 57% of cans are recycled in the UK (65% of steel cans and 50% of aluminium cans. )

Recycled Content
Cans are made from steel or aluminium produced with more than 50% recycled material.

Steel cans are made from steel produced with 56% recycled material.
Aluminium cans are made from aluminium produced with 50% recycled material.
